CHAPTER SIX—LIBBY’S TURN
At some point during the night, Ava whispered: “Libby? You awake?”
Mrs. Purr slumbered on my chest, and I didn’t answer.
You’re so pretty, and I’m an idiot.
You’re so pretty, and I’m an idiot.
What the hell was that supposed to mean? Not that I’d ask. Thank goodness for Mrs. Purr. She was my excuse to stay stiff, unmoving. Quiet.
“I can’t sleep,” Ava said.
Join the club, missy.
The expression on Ava’s face right before she turned the light off…hard to explain. Something like awe. The wonder of a realization.
Or the acceptance of a long-denied truth.
“Libby? Could we maybe try to be friends again after this? After I leave Leviston?”
Irritation cut through me. No, crazy woman. I’m not gonna be your sexuality science experiment.
“I’m going to touch you,” Ava whispered. “Is that okay?”
My brain recoiled in horror: No. Not okay. My heart, my body, plunged forth in soft gasps and cries: Yes, yes, please.
Touching in the dark is different. It just is. It’s more thrilling. Forbidden. Hidden. You’re between two worlds. You can fake being asleep and pretend in the morning that nothing happened.
Ava curled into me and wrapped one of her arms around my hip. Her mouth came to rest near my neck, and her breath blew hot and arousing.
“Mrrrow! Mrrrow!” Mrs. Purr expressed her indignation at having to share my body, and Ava shoved the cat off.
I waited to see what Ava would do next. I, me, moi, Libby Lubbock, had turned to putty. If Ava started to fuck me, I suspected I’d go along. Happily. For one thing, I was starved. Raring to go, ready to be with a woman again. The last time I had sex was with Ellen a little more than a year ago—a couple of days before I left for that out-of-town seminar. Ellen insisted that she and Mavis, the woman I caught her with, hadn’t been carrying on an affair. They were friends for a while, and I busted their first time together. If that was supposed to make me feel better, it did not. Chalk up another success to Libbyus Interruptus, right?
I tried not to remember that day. But such a task proved impossible, even as Ava nuzzled my neck. “You feel good, Libby. You smell so good. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I was an ass in high school. I was scared. I liked you a lot. I liked you back. You know that, don’t you?”
I remembered texting Ellen that I’d be home early because of a water pipe break in the hotel/conference center. No answer from her. Me arriving home, hearing the…
And then opening the bedroom door and just staring. Watching. Heart in my throat.
Ava’s nuzzles turned to kisses, increasingly hard and desperate ministrations. She moved from my neck to my earlobe. She climbed on top of me and switched to my other earlobe.
Whatever she did, she had better not kiss me on the mouth. I could rationalize sex as long as no mouth kissing occurred. Hey, give me a break, all right? It was late at night, and my thoughts were all over the place.
